There is a short list of FDA approved weight loss pills. In fact, each one is either a fat blocker or an appetite suppressant. The FDA approved weight loss pills that are categorized as fat blockers are the compound drug Orlistat which is available in prescription - Xenical - and non-prescription - Alli - strength. In the arena of appetite suppressants, the FDA has approved Phentermine, Phendimetrazine, and Diethylpropion.

Fat Blockers

Xenical (Prescription)

In 1999, the FDA approved the fat blocker Xenical in a prescription only form. The active ingredient is Orlistat (120 mg). This pill has a large success rate when paired with a healthy diet and exercise. Xenical works by blocking 30% of dietary fat that is absorbed by your body.

There is an enzyme called lipase found within the intestinal tract. Lipase breaks down dietary fat in order to allow the body to absorb the fat. Xenical inhibits the action of the enzyme. When this happens, it helps your body to reduce the amount of fat that is absorbed. The unabsorbed fat will then be released in the stool.

Fat soluble vitamins are not easily absorbed when taking Xenical. For this reason, it is advisable to take a vitamin supplement at least 2 hours before taking the diet pill. It is best to maintain a low fat diet while taking Xenical. This is due to the increase in negative side effects when eating a high fat diet. Most common side effects include oily stools, gas and frequent bowel movements.

Alli (Over-the-Counter)

Alli is the only over-the-counter fat blocker that is approved by the FDA. This diet supplement has been on the market since the summer of 2007. It has the same active ingredient as Xenical. However, at 60 mg is in only half the strength of prescription Xenical. The side effects are the same and need to be complimented with a low fat diet. Most common side effects include oily stools, gas and frequent bowel movements.

Appetite Suppressants

Appetite suppressants are a widely popular type of diet pill. They work by increasing serotonin or catecholamine. These are chemicals in the brain, which affect mood and appetite. By altering these chemicals, it gives you the feeling of being full and reduces your appetite.

There are 3 forms of appetite suppressants that are approved by the Food and Drug Administration: Diethylpropion (Tenuate), Phendimetrazine (Bontril) and Phentermine (Adipex-P, Fastin, Ionamin). The most common and well known is Phentermine.

Phentermine (Prescription)

The FDA first began to improve appetite suppressants in 1959, starting with Phentermine. You can purchase Phentermine by prescription only in the form of a tablet or an extended release capsule. It can either be prescribed for once a day, or 3 times a day before meals.

These drugs can cause dependency and are to be used for short-term treatment only. Phentermine should be used in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise plan. Side effects include dry mouth, constipation, or diarrhea. If you experience dizziness or chest pains while taking Phentermine you should consult your doctor.

Phen375 (Over-the-Counter)*

Phen375 is an over-the-counter phentemine based appetite suppressant that was released in 2009. It is a legal diet pill that contains ingredients designed for weight loss. Phentemine diet pills are known as the leading appetite suppressant on the market today. Phen375 includes all the components that made the original Phentermine an effective weight loss product, while removing the negative side effects.
