FDA Warning Weight Loss Pills
The FDA has issued a warning on over 70 weight loss pills that contain undeclared active pharmaceutical ingredients that may be harmful. Following is a list of these potentially dangerous ingredients.
Bumetanide
A presciption diuretic which is the active pharmaceutical ingredient in Bumex. The potential risks include electrolyte loss and low blood pressure. The elderly and those with kidney problems may be at risk for toxic reactions.
Cetilistat
An experimental obesity drug that is still in the clinical trial stage. The most
serious complications of Cetilstat are to transplant patients. This is an anti-
Fenproporex
A stimulant which does not have U.S. marketing approval. Fenproporex is a derivative of amphetamines and could cause someone to test positive for amphetamines in a drug screening. Other negatives reactions to this drug include headaches, high blood pressure, fever, dizziness, fainting, and even possible death.
Fluoxetine
The active ingredient in the prescription antidepressant Prozac. Antidepressants have been shown to increase suicidal thoughts in children and young adults. Less serious health risks of Fluoxetine include hives, headache, anxiety, and insomnia.
Furosemide
The active ingredient in the powerful prescription diuretic Lasix. Potential risks include severe dehydration, kidney damage, or even coma.
Phenolphthalein
The ingredient in some OTC laxatives until the FDA decided they unsafe in 1999. Findings include carcinogenic risks and possible DNA mutation.
Phenytoin
the active ingredient in the anti seizure medication Dilantin. There were only trace amounts of Dilantin in some weight loss pills so risks were not fully assessed.
Rimonabant
the active ingredient in Zimulti which is not U.S. Approved. Side effects of this drug include depression, anxiety, and suicidal thinking.
Sibutramine
is a controlled substance that is the active ingredient in the prescription drug Meridia which treats obesity. Some of the FDA warning diet pills recommended taking three times the recommended dosage. Risks include high blood pressure and seizure.
Following is a list of diet pills and products that now carry an FDA warning. Some of the products claim to be all natural or herbal. However, all of them contain at least one of the dangerous drugs listed above and no not disclose them in the ingredients. You may have bought these diet products online or even at a retail store. If you realize you have one of these items, stop taking them and consult your physician.
